Cambodia plans to buy 1 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine as a first step

The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, on the evening of December 7, 2020, announced on his official Facebook page that he had introduced the Minister of Economy and Finance  will prepare one million doses for Covid-19 vaccine for the initial injection for those working in areas high risk and those at risk.

Samdech Techo announced that the first 1 million doses of the vaccine will be given to the people free of charge.

Regarding which country should buy the Covid-19 vaccine, Samdech Techo said, “I have advised the Minister of Health to discuss with development partners. In particular, the World Health Organization to determine which country we should buy the vaccine from.”

One million doses of the vaccine can only be given to 500,000 people (because one needs to be vaccinated twice) while Cambodia has a population of 16 million. Young and old, of which about 10 million people need to be vaccinated, said Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

In a situation where Cambodia is short of funds to buy more, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said, “I have introduced two ministers (the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy). “To discuss with bilateral and multilateral development partners to seek additional assistance to help our people.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also said that for the next stage, the Minister of Economy and Finance to prepare a budget for the purchase of 2 to 3 million dollars more.
